I was hooked on this author's writing style within the first paragraphs of this book. The story line, which traces the lives of Felix (a gentile) and Magdalena (his Jewish wife) through two periods of history; WWII and the 1950's, is told through delicious prose that is both richly detailed and perfectly succinct. Not only could I picture myself within the settings, I could feel the anxiety and fear the characters experienced throughout their lives. To say the characters came to life, does not do them justice. The plot is well-developed and I learned so much about the history of the eastern block during the cold war. Highly recommend to anyone searching for a beautifully written historical thriller.
